40 Years Ago Today, a Big Day

January 24, 2013 Leave a comment

Nope, it is not my birthday –  the graying of me hairs & the lines on me face, they do betray me and give me away.

Rather, it is a Big Day because 40 years ago the Supreme Court ruled on the landmark case, Roe v. Wade, which has indelibly impacted the lives of millions. On this day, 40 years ago, it became legal to terminate a pregnancy.

Singles of all ages are free from the certainty of the social stigma associated with pregnancy outside of marriage. The distraught & embarrassed parents now have an avenue to protect the family name, other than sending the problem away for a while.

Married couples and career-minded individuals are able to take complete control of their lives, able to decide when it is convenient to have a child and when it is not. Accidents are a thing of the past as they can be erased.

We are free to live as we please, indulge in whatever pleasures we fancy, with whoever is willing. The anxiety caused by missing a pill, or bypassing other protection methods in the heat of the moment – health concerns aside – isn’t the end of the world.

It is no longer necessary for anyone, of any social strata, to resort to clandestine & shameful, back alley, ‘clothes hanger procedures’ to free oneself from the shackles of unwanted pregnancy. To each & every one – regardless of race, creed, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation – there is the freedom to be child-free.

Indeed, this ruling has impacted the lives of the many millions since its inception. But none more so than the millions of victims of this ruling.

Yup, victims. Who are these Victims? (To be continued…)  See the related article here.

Wise Beyond Her Years

At least it seems to me.  Some might say I am biased.  Tough toodley.

Wisdom comes in doses, mostly small ones.  As with every good thing, you have to persevere.  If you really want it.  This good thing is learned.  It is a gift.  It is given only to those with a heart turned toward our God.  A humble heart.  A contrite heart.  Which is why it is difficult to obtain Wisdom.  Who wants to be humble?  Who seeks out humiliation?  Only One I know of.  But He makes it possible to do the impossible.  We have the Comforter.  Availed always.  Present.  Leading.  Urging.  Guiding.  Protecting.  Patient.

Forward Ho!, my dear one.  The Pearl is before you.  Always.

Calling & Vocation

Do you ever wonder about your calling, your vocation, and how God’s will for you figures in? Do you have difficulty discerning His will for you? Do you wonder, worry, or fret about whether ‘this’ (whatever ‘this’ might be) is really what you should be expending all your energy on? I imagine most everyone does, at least to some degree. There are some, however, who feel certain they have it nailed – and do. May they be a blessing to all they come into contact with as God has surely blessed them. I can say with certainty that I am cannot be counted among them. <sigh> I know that comes as a shock to everyone 🙂

Well, the whole point to this is that there is an excellent article that may be of help. I hope you find it worthwhile.

The Meaning of the Cross

September 12, 2010 Leave a comment

Today, being the Sunday before the Elevation of the Cross, Fr Gregory’s homily was about the Cross – and its meaning for us. I hope you can 1) access the link successfully, and 2) hear it – you may have to adjust volume at times. We record using a digital voice recorder, *without* a mic, so sound quality isn’t the best around.

Here’s to You Kid….

I am always amazed at our friend over at the Scrap Heap. He has a gift for writing; he is also able to write honestly about the most difficult of topics – self, and all the while making us laugh. I have admired his willingness to share so openly those things many of us feel but are either unable, or unwilling, to put into words. And then to share those words with others, wow.

But the Scrap Heap, in hindsight so prophetically named, has been tossed into the land ‘o blogs landfill, and is no more.

Thank you my friend. Perhaps you will resurface under another identity, to share your gift with all of us who have come to eagerly anticipate the next offering.

Love you, buddy

Why We Fast

February 15, 2010 Leave a comment

People are often intrigued by, or some may be wary of, the fasting that takes place in the Orthodox Church when they become aware of the practice. There is much that can be said about fasting, and plenty has been said by many. But as today marks the beginning of the Great Fast (Lent), Fr. Stephen has a post that talks about why we fast. When all is said and done, this post may leave one asking oneself “Why don’t we fast”? Enjoy.
