Martyrdom By the Numbers

Christianity Today has a blog piece from May that shows a couple of graphics (chart and numbers, not pictures of people being martyred) indicating the number of martyrs through the ages.

Almost 2/3 of those martyred since the time of Christ have been Orthodox? However can it be that most of the United States has never even HEARD of Orthodoxy? (I count myself in this number, as I knew nothing about until the last year.)

    Our eyes are blind…

Eye-opening, indeed. As for the blindness you mention, I think it says something about what we would never suspect in our thoroughly modern, technological existence – that perhaps we are isolated from the rest of the world. The real “blindness” that comes with this isolation may well be due to blinders we wear about ourselves – that our country, our culture, our way of life is the be-all end-all and anything else is inferior. We are, after all, the leader of the free world. Why wouldn’t/shouldn’t everything else be less than us?

As for sheer numbers of martyrs among the all the Christian groups, it drives home Christ’s promise that we will suffer for His sake, many of whom will suffer unto death.
